Would you like to make a positive impact on decreasing the alarming situation of hunger in the US? Are you unsure how you can contribute to a solution? Here is a wonderful method of making a positive contribution to reducing our nation’s hunger problem.
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), around 1 in 6 people faces hunger on a regular basis. The USDA blames “food insecurity,” the absence of access to sufficient food for all household members, as the primary reason for this troubling condition in the United States.
That this epidemic occurs in the greatest food producing country on the planet is inexcusable—but, also reality. Based on 2015 statistics, those households with children suffer higher rates of hunger than those without child members. While12.2 percent of childless households face hunger regularly, around 20.6 percent of households with children endure food insecurity on a daily basis.
This problem is not confined to one or two areas of the US. According to the USDA, food insecurity is prevalent in every county in the nation. 2013 statistics estimate that around 17.5 million households, almost 50 million US residents, are food insecure.
Obviously, this epidemic is not related to the lack of food. This condition isrelated to the widespread prevalence of people living at or below the poverty level.
Over 1 in 5 children faces the risk of hunger. When you consider only African-Americans and Latinos, this risk to children rises to more than 33 percent. These people and children risk enduring “prolonged micronutrient deficiency” which often causes a weakened immune system, declining cognitive (learning) ability, and/or the onset of chronic diseases.
The long-term prognosis for US children is scary. Over 17 million children may suffer a variety of physical and mental issues for their lifetimes. These undernourished kids are likely to endure more illness and declining performance in school, compounding and expanding their lifestyle problems.
